What each screen app says it touches
15 Mac and Windows apps, checked against four things about screen light. A cell lights up only where the app's maker says so, in its own words.
What is PWM flicker?
Many screens dim by switching the backlight on and off very fast. This is pulse width modulation, or PWM. At a high setting the light is on for most of each cycle. Turn brightness down and each off period gets longer. The switching is too fast to see as blinking. Some people report eye strain or headaches at low brightness settings. Two other things come up with it: dithering, a fast shimmer of pixel colors used to fake extra shades, and software dimming, which darkens the picture while the backlight stays up.
